Culion Island is one of the most under-visited destinations in Calamianes islands because few tourists ever make the journey here during their stay in the region.
Despite being one of the largest islands in the Calamianes chain, Culion has none of the fame of nearby Coron Island, and none of the tourists of Busuanga Island.
The scenery though can easily match and even outdo the more popular spots in Coron, while the local history and culture are absolutely fascinating.
The local history could be one reason why few tourists know about Culion Island, and that's because, for much of the 20th century, this was a leper colony.

The History of Culion
The magnificent island of Culion in Palawan used to be called a number of terrifying nicknames such as “The Land of the Living Dead,” “Island of No Return,” and many more. But it's not because the place is haunted or plagued with witchcraft, it's because Culion used to be a leprosarium or a leper colony where people infected with Leprosy are isolated.
For 100 years, Culion became a dreaded place where no tourists or even visitors dared to visit. But not anymore. Since it was finally declared to be a leprosy-free area by the World Health Organization in 2006, Culion became one of the few places on Earth you can actually call a tropical paradise.
For 100 years, the people and the place were untouched. Leaving little to no traces of pollution on the island. What was then filled with hundreds of sick people now overflows with countless natural and historical wonders that will certainly inspire your wanderlust.
Walking around the island of Culion is like exploring a living museum. Everywhere you go, every place you see, and every person you meet will give you a glimpse of Culion's colorful history and nostalgic old-world charm. The houses, buildings, and religious structures are all beautiful pieces of history, culture, and art.
The town is also filled with hidden gems that open lots of tourism opportunities on the island such as mountains and rock formations for hiking and trekking as well as beachfront and lagoons for swimming and scuba diving.
In the past, Culion treated countless patients of the tormenting disease of leprosy.
